It was a great year for boxing, and picking the best-of-the-best was delightfully difficult. The year was packed with excitement from start to brilliant finish. Here is one opinion on the cream of this year's bumper crop. -Nat Gottlieb, HBO.com
BEST UPSET: Nonito Donaire
Donaire (19-1) had some pretty stiff competition for this award from Rees and Gerry Penalosa. To appreciate how stunning Donaire's knock out of the heavy-handed Darchinyan (28-0) was, look at the records of his three previous opponents: He beat Kevin Hudgins (5-9) just two months before facing Darchinyan; prior to Hudgins he defeated Oscar Andrade (35-24-1) and Jose Luis Cardenas (5-6-1). Donaire literally came out of nowhere. Ironically, both Darchinyan and Donaire are promoted by Gary Shaw, who is not afraid to take risks with his fighters. Shaw had taken the little known Aussie, Darchinyan, and in one year got him the kind of superstardom very few lower-weight fighters experience. Now Shaw has a new one.
BEST KNOCKOUT: Nonito Donaire
His one-punch knockout of Darchinyan was as shocking to Vicious Vic as it was to fans. Donaire's counter left hook put Darchinyan down on the canvas. In a sickening spectacle, the bloodied champion rose at the count of seven, but his legs quickly gave way and he careened across the ring like a pinball before collapsing on the ropes, out on his feet. So devastating was the blow that Darchinyan later admitted he had no clue he had been knocked out until after he saw the replay. Now that's a KO!

SHOWTIME DEFEATS "YANKEES”, 2-1 (15rounds.com 8.07.07) In fairness, it should be said that Showtime World Championship Boxing had every advantage over Top Rank PPV in the battle for viewing supremacy this past weekend. First and foremost, Showtime’s main event of Rafael Marquez- Israel Vazquez II for the WBC super bantamweight title was a continuation of a Fight of the Year candidate and there was every expectation, which ultimately came to pass, that this rematch of Marquez’ victory in March might equal or exceed the excitement and drama of their first encounter. Also the Showtime card was free to subscribers and broadcast in high definition TV. (full story)

The battle between Z Gorres and Vic Darchinyan ended in a controversial split draw moments ago at the Waterfront Hotel in Cebu. Darchinyan was credited a knockdown as Gorres clearly lost his balance as he slipped, making the crowd rowdy as they pelted the ring with coins and bottled water. Gorres came back in the second round as he hit Darchinyan with a clean left hook to the face. Fron then on it was action-packed as both combatants exchanged clean blows. In the 6th round, Gorres got hit by a headbutt, causing an ugly gash on his right forehead. Gorres bled profusely throughout the match and seemed to be fading towards the end. The Filipino however hung tough as he avoided Darchinyan's blows with good head and body movements. A left straight that hit Gorres' right shoulder and barely hitting his face floored the Filipino in the 9th canto. Darchinyan strafed Gorres with wild lefts, a few of them caught Gorres. Scores were 113-112 for Gorres, 114-112 for Darchinyan and the third judge saw it 113-113.

VIDEO INTERVIEW: NONITO DONAIRE (boxingconfidential.com 10.20.07) (watch video)
Ask newly-crowned IBF/IBO flyweight champion NONITO DONAIRE if he has a lucky number and he may respond with 07-07-07...the date he pulled off the "upset of the year" by starching the previously undefeated and invincible defending champion Vic Darchinyan with the "knockout of the year." Donaire (18-1, 11 KOs), known as "The Filipino Flash," is a native of General Santos City in The Philippines, now living in San Leandro, Calif. Moving down from his familiar stomping grounds as a super flyweight, Donaire extended his six-year winning streak to 17 fights landing a left hook to the jaw of Darchinyan (28-1, 22 KOs), ending the fight, and Darchinyan's 2 1/2 year (including six successful defenses) title reign at :28 of round five. Donaire is promoted by Gary Shaw and managed by Cameron Dunkin.
"For all my people in The Philippines who didn't believe in me before, I hope you are believers in me now," exclaimed a joyous Donaire. "I worked so hard for this fight and I always knew if I were given the opportunity to fight Darchinyan I would beat him, even if it meant me going down to a weight I hadn't fought at in many years. I am proud to be a Filipino and I hope my people are just as proud of me as their new world champion. We will move forward together defending this title."

Donaire knocks out Darchinyan in stunning upset (secondsout.com 7.8.07) “I came in here as an underdog,” said Donaire. “Nobody believed in me but I did it. I think the key for me in tonight’s fight was every time Darchinyan threw and landed, I punched back and that got him thinking. It took the bully out of him.” (full story)

Is Vivian Harris the best junior-welterweight in the world? (doghouseboxing.com.2.11.07) As Emmanuel Steward stated Saturday night on HBO, Vivian Harris doesn't want to move up in weight. But after the sudden retirement of Kostya Tyszu, and the division's best talents such as Floyd Mayweather Jr, and Miguel Cotto moving up to fight at the now more lucrative welterweight division,
that decision might as well suggest that Vivian Harris is the best
140-pound fighter in the world. (full story)

GSP SIGNS UNDEFEATED BANTAMWEIGHT CONTENDER YONNHY PEREZ
|
TOTOWA, NJ (August 7, 2007) -- Gary Shaw announced the signing of undefeated WBC Continental Americas bantamweight champion YONNHY PEREZ to an exclusive promotional contract. Perez (12-0, 9 KOs), will be co-promoted by Gary Shaw Productions and Thompson Boxing Promotions.
A native of Cartagena, Colombia, Perez , with 240 amateur fights to his credit, was a Colombian national amateur champion for four consecutive years before turning pro in 2005. He fought most of his amateur bouts while serving a seven-year hitch in the Colombian Army, from age 17 to 24. Now based in Santa Fe Springs, Calif., Perez is trained by Danny Zamora.
"Yonnhy has a lot of talent and a lot of power at 118 pounds and 115 pounds," said Shaw. "He knocked out a very experienced fighter in Samuel Lopez in the first round and that told me a lot. I think the 115 and 118 pound divisions are in for a rude awakening with Yohnny Perez on the prowl."
Perez, who is already 4-0 (3 KOs) this year, returns to the ring on September 7 at Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez, Calif., where he will open up the broadcast of "ShoBox: The New Generation" on SHOWTIME.
