Antonio DeMarco Ready For

By Jake Donovan -

There’s something to be said about a fighter who wasn’t always
destined for greatness yet still remain at a pace similar to
those who were groomed for success from the moment they turned
pro.
Antonio DeMarco wasn’t born with a silver spoon in his mouth,

Instead, he went about his business the old-fashioned way – he

Timothy Bradley’s Promoter: “Amir Khan is a Fraud!”
By Rick Reeno -
boxingscene.com
Earlier today, BoxingScene.com was contacted by promoter Gary
Shaw, who had a lot to say after reading our story on the
“Twitter” battle between junior welterweights Amir Khan and
Paulie Malignaggi .
Khan is claiming that Malignaggi is avoiding a potential fight
between the two of them, and Malignaggi is making the same
claims about Khan. Shaw weighed in with a few comments of his
own. He says Malignaggi is telling the truth, not Khan.
A few weeks ago, Shaw was negotiating with Khan’s former
promoter Frank Warren to match the British champion against
unbeaten WBO title holder Timothy Bradley. The two promoters
were close to a deal, but it quickly went down the toilet when
Khan signed a contract with Golden Boy Promotions. Shaw was
turned down when he reached out to Golden Boy to make a
Khan-Bradley fight. Click Here For More

Antonio DeMarco, the Tijuana Tough Guy
By Steve Kim - maxboxing.com
When it comes to Antonio DeMarco, who challenges for the WBC
lightweight title this Saturday night in Monterrey, Mexico
(Showtime 9 PM, ET/PT), looks can be deceiving. His rather frail
body looks as though a stiff breeze could knock him over. He’s
got the arms the size of Olive Oyl, yet he packs a pretty stiff
punch. DeMarco’s also a nice guy. And you know where Leo
Durocher thought those guys ended up.
But you shouldn’t judge this book by its cover.
"He’s a very, very calm individual with a lot of
self-confidence," says his promoter Gary Shaw, "and I guess,
when you look at Tony DeMarco and his physique and everything
else, you worry about him. You want to go run and get him a meal
ticket. So he’s got a real deceiving personality for a fighter
and, physically, he’s very deceiving for a fighter." Click Here For More

Despite being in the middle of his intense preparation for his

“I don’t like to be the type of fighter that talks bad about my

That is why in interviews I try to give good answers and I

Bradley is Desert Stormin'

that Khan is part of Roach’s stable at the Wild Card Boxing Club

Timothy Bradley stuck and moved his way past Lamont Peterson to
retain the WBO 140 lb. championship at a sold out Agua Caliente
Casino, Resort & Spa in Rancho Mirage, CA. Non-stop movement was
not Bradley’s original game plan, but became plan B at the
insistence of his corner. “The game plan was to take it to him,
but he decided to take it to me”, explained Bradley of the
change in tactics midway through the contest.
Bradley, of nearby Palm Springs, CA, found a home for his right
hand early in the second. Bradley (25-0) landed the punch
repeatedly in a round he won decisively. An overhand right
dropped Peterson early in the third, setting the stage for a
tremendous round of boxing. “I planned to win the first four
rounds big”, said Peterson. “But when I went down in the third
it was time to fight.” For the remainder of the round the
combatants fought toe-to-toe exchanging vicious body blows.
Peterson (27-1) continued the body assault in the fourth to win
the round. “He made me fight”, said Bradley. “He made me do
things in there I normally don’t do.” Click Here For More

Marquez - Pound4Pound.com
Timothy Bradley (now 25-0-0-1, 11 KO's) retained the WBO Jr.
Welterweight Title with a unanimous decision over Lamont
Peterson. The fight started quick as the two men were locked on
the inside exchanging heavy body punches. A huge right at the
end of the round staggered Peterson. In round 3, another right
on the side of the head sent Peterson down for the first time in
the fight. Peterson got up and dug deep, fighting hard, winning
the rest of the round, including coming back to take the next
round. However that would be the best Peterson had to offer as
Bradley took control of the remainder of the fight, slipping
that majority of Peterson's punches and landing good
combinations. Final scores were 118-110, 119-108 and 120-107.
Peterson falls to 27-1, 13 KO's.

The Brooklyn-based light welterweight lost that bout in August,

Showtime to show Vazquez-Marquez IV
By Dan Rafael -

Israel Vazquez and Rafael Marquez have already waged an epic
trilogy consisting of 25 rounds of furious, non-stop action.
Now, the Mexican warriors will clash for the fourth -- and final
-- time, the promoters for both fighters told ESPN.com on
Friday.
The deal for the much-discussed fight was completed following a
final conference call between Marquez promoter Gary Shaw, Golden
Boy's Richard Schaefer, who promotes Vazquez, and Showtime
executive Ken Hershman, Shaw said.
The scheduled 12-round featherweight fight will take place May
22 on Showtime from the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Click Here For More
Timothy Bradley vs. Lamont Peterson
Teleconference Highlights
TIMOTHY BRADLEY:
“Lamont Peterson is a great fighter; I grew up with him in the
amateurs. I know him very well and he knows me very well. I’m
just looking forward to the fight. I’m hungry and I’m willing to
show the world what I have. We’re both undefeated, which makes
for a great fight. We both have speed and power, and we both
have boxing ability, so it’s going to be a great fight. But, at
the end of the day, it’s my job to teach Lamont Peterson how to
lose, and that’s what I’m going to do on Dec. 12.”
LAMONT PETERSON: “I’ve been training ever since I went out
to California to see Timothy and Nate fight. We pretty much knew
this was going to be my next fight, we just didn’t know when at
the time. Right now, I’ve been in great shape for two or three
months. We’re just trying to level everything out and doing what
we need to do to give us a chance to win. We feel really good
right now, and we’re looking to go ahead and win the title on
Dec. 12." Click Here For More
The Shaw-riff Seeks Justice for Funeka
By Steve Kim -
maxboxing.com
It’s not clear who had a worse Thanksgiving weekend, Ali Funeka,
who got the shaft from the judges in his fight for the vacant
IBF lightweight title against Joan Guzman, or Tiger Woods who
might have gotten the shaft of a sand wedge from his irate wife.
"Well, I would say Tiger because Ali didn’t get hit with
anything," said Gary Shaw, who promotes the lanky South African.
And he has a point, hey, it’s not like Funeka was ever laid out,
needing medical attention.
But on a serious note, the scorecards rendered by judges Alan
Davis and Benoit Russell, who both had the fight a dead even
draw at 114-114( while Joseph Pasquale had Funeka winning big at
116-112) is the runaway choice as the worst decision of 2009.
There is nary a soul who believes that Funeka did not win this
fight handily. Click Here For More
What now for Hopkins? Maybe Dawson
By Dan Rafael -
espn.com
Chad Dawson, the young light heavyweight star, has been calling
out Bernard Hopkins for ages, but Hopkins didn't have a lot of
interest in fighting him. And who could blame Hopkins, with a
potential big-money rematch against Roy Jones Jr. on the table
for early 2010?
However, that was until Jones got knocked out by Danny Green in
the first round Wednesday in Australia, hopefully bringing
Jones' great career to a close once and for all.
Hopkins will attend to his business Wednesday night against
Enrique Ornelas, but there won't be a fight with Jones now. Click Here For More
Chad Dawson Calls Out Bernard Hopkins
By Lem Satterfield
Outside of the ropes, it takes a lot to get Chad Dawson riled
up.
"Chad Dawson is one of the best fighters in the world, and he
shows it every time that he goes into the ring," said Dawson's
promoter, Gary Shaw. "It's just not Chad's style to talk smack
or to call people out."
But that changed on Wednesday morning, after Dawson discovered
that Roy Jones was stopped in the first round, likely scuttling
a proposed, megabout with Bernard Hopkins -- a man Dawson has
long targeted as an opponent. Click Here For More
Funeka robbery can't be swept under the rug
By Dan Rafael -
espn.com
Bad decisions don't happen just in the United States and
Germany. You can add Canada to the list.
Lightweight Ali Funeka dominated Joan Guzman so severely that
the reading of the scorecards at the end of 12 mostly one-sided
rounds appeared to be a mere formality on Saturday night at
Colisée Pepsi in Quebec City.
Gary Shaw, who co-promotes Funeka with Cedric Kushner, was
inside the ring after the final bell with a huge smile on his
face, congratulating his man on what appeared clear as day --
that Funeka would win a unanimous decision and a vacant
lightweight belt in his second shot at a 135-pound title. Click Here For More
Gary Shaw speaks about the controversial
Funeka-Guzman decision
By
Geoffrey Ciani - eastsideboxing.com
At the conclusion of Saturday night’s fight between Ali Funeka
and Joan Guzman, the verdict seemed pretty clear—Ali Funeka won
the fight. This was not an especially difficult fight to score.
Funeka won, and he should have been awarded the vacant IBF
lightweight title. To the astonishment of those in attendance
and those watching around the world, the fight was inexplicably
ruled a draw. I had a chance to speak with promoter Gary Shaw
after the fight, and here is what he had to say:

Funeka beats up Guzman....but only gets a draw
El Paso Times
In the wake of Manny Pacquiao's demolition of Miguel Cotto - and
some very real signs that boxing is emerging from a decades-long
stupor - things have been looking pretty positive for the sweet
science lately.
Leave it to a bad decision to remind us how boxing sank so low
in the first place.
Despite outpunching and outslugging Joan Guzman in a battle for
the vacant IBF lightweight title, Ali Funeka came away with only
a draw to show for it Saturday in Quebec City, Canada. It was
easily the most impressive performance of Funeka's career, as
the South African put a hurtin' on the smaller Guzman early,
ripping the native Dominican with every punch in the manual:
jabs, right hands, left hooks and uppercuts.

Gary Shaw and The Canadian Heist
Jerry Glick - secondsout.com
HBO had a great show on Saturday night that was marred by yet
another bad decision. This time it was a draw between unbeaten
former two division champion Joan Guzman and Ali Funeka at the
Pepsi Coliseum in Québec City, Québec, Canada. While a draw may
sound fair enough it clearly was not as Funeka, looking like a
cross between Tommy Hearns and Paul Williams appeared to control
the ring almost completely after the first two or three rounds.
After a few rounds Guzman’s face was a mask of blood that came
from his nose and a cut. Once the long and lean Funeka got
untracked it was almost all his fight to dominate.
I spoke to Funeka’s promoter Gary Shaw the next day and he was
ready to fight everyone in sight who he believed screwed his
charge.

Funeka Gets Robbed Of Biggest Win Of His Career
After Putting On One Sided Performance Over Guzman
Fight Declared A Draw After Funeka
Wins 10 Round To 2
Pound4Pound.com
The biggest robbery of the year just took place in Quebec,
Canada as Ali Funeka put on a boxing showcase and appeared to
win TEN of the 12 championship rounds against undefeated Joan
Guzman, only to walk away with a draw. Guzman came out string
and appeared to win the first two rounds, but that was it.
Funeka took complete control over the remaining ten rounds and
took Guzman to school, bloodying his face to a pulp and nearly
stopping him in each of the final 5 rounds. The referee could
very well have stepped in during any of those rounds and stopped
the fight as Guzman was just taking a beating against the ropes.
Final scores were 116-112, 114-114, 114-114.
Stevie Wonder could have seen Funeka won this fight hands down.

Dawson Makes Johnson Look His Age
With Near Shutout Unanimous Decision
Pound4Pound.com
Chad Dawson (now 29-0-0-1, 17 KO's) won a
much easier fight with Glen Johnson than their first encounter,
with a unanimous decision. Although two judges had it much too
close (one round from being a draw), the reality was Johnson won
about 2 rounds at most.
From the opening round, Dawson used his height, reach, and
movement to land and move. That's how the majority of the fight
went. Johnson's pressure wasn't the same as any of his previous
fights, but one is to question whether his age has finally
caught up with him, or was it Dawson's technique that caused the
confusion.Click Here For More

strong once the bell rang as Yorgey's plan was to move and box.
Angulo pressured Yorgey to fight off the ropes, but Yorgey
seemed to back himself there and into the corner often.
In round 2, a huge right hand stopped Yorgey in his tracks and
momentarily knocked him unconscious while standing. Yorgey
regained his senses before falling to the canvas, but was
finally dropped moments later with another big right hand. Up on
shaky legs, Yorgey was staggered around the ring as Angulo began
beating him to a pulp. Yorgey miraculously made it out of the
round, staggering to his corner.Click Here For More

including then-unbeaten champion Tomasz Adamek — last year
Dawson ran into a roadblock named Glen Johnson, a rugged

Dirrell Gets Robbed In England
Carl Froch (now 26-0, 20 KO's) retained the WBC Super
Middleweight title controversially against Andre Dirrell in a
fight that had more illegal tactics than actual boxing. Hitting
behind the head, holding, falling to the canvas, take downs,
pushing, headlocks, the works, this fight was ugly from
beginning to end.
However, it was Dirrell who looked to have clearly secured
victory. Although his style was not pleasing to the fans, often
holding and running away even smothering himself to avoid
getting hit, it was just that: HE WASN'T GETTING HIT. All while
Froch was waiting and waiting, throwing slow and missing often,
getting countered in every round, even getting staggered and
nearly out on his feet at the end of the 10th. Earlier in the
same round, a point deduction from Dirrell for holding was
issued. Mind you Froch was landing, but not enough to win more
than 3 rounds. Even with the point deduction, Dirrell appeared
to have taken the title.
Dirrell falls to 18-1 with 13 KO's and will be taking on Arthur
Abraham next in the tournament.
Froch & Dirrell Weigh-In
There was high drama at the historic Old Market Square in
Nottingham today when Andre “The Matrix” Dirrell failed to make
the weight at the first time of asking ahead of his Super Six
World Boxing Classic showdown with Carl “The Cobra” Froch at the
Trent FM Arena tomorrow night.
Earlier in the week WBC World Champion Froch intimated that his
undefeated American challenger may be struggling to make the 168
pound Super Middleweight limit and he turned out to be correct
as Dirrell’s first attempt at making the weight saw him tip the
scales at 168.4 pounds.

Andre Dirrell aims to be Gary Shaw’s next big thing
By Ron Lewis - timesonline.co.uk
Gary Shaw has been around enough champions to know that it does
not do your credibility much good to make outlandish
predictions.
In 2005, the American promoter arrived in Britain accompanying
Jeff Lacy, the unbeaten IBF super-middleweight champion and a
man being touted as the new Mike Tyson. So confident was Shaw of
victory for his man that he said he would bet his house on it.
But the man in the other corner was Joe Calzaghe.

Q & A with Alfredo Angulo
By Anson Wainwright - 15rounds.com
One of the most exciting fighters in the world at the moment is
all action Mexican Light Middleweight Alfredo “Perro” Angulo
16-1(13) who next gets back in action on 7 November. Angulo was
born in Mexicali, Mexico and was one of six children .At 17 he
first got in Boxing after watching the second Oscar De La
Hoya-Julio Cesar Chavez Snr fight. He enjoyed a successful
amateur career that took him to the 2004 Olympics. Having
finished his amateur days with an impressive 80-15 he decided to
turn pro under the astute guidance of Mike Criscio who also
manages Light Heavyweight champion Chad Dawson. Angulo is
trained by Clemente Medina at The Maywood Boxing Club & promoted
by Gary Shaw. After a slow start Angulo stepped up and became a
player in the talent rich Light Middleweight division. Since
then he’s kept his foot on the gas with the only setback a
decision loss to the vastly more experience former world
champion Kermit Cintron. Since that loss in which Angulo was
fighting days after being bed ridden with Flu, he has got back
into action with a thumping second round KO over Gabriel Rosado.
Now it’s time to do it in front of a bigger audience on HBO
against unbeaten hardnosed Harry Joe Yorgey. Angulo is currently
ranked 5 by the WBC, 6 WBA, 8 WBO & 9 IBF.

Grano Win Over Kauffman Due To Low Blow,
Loss Of Mouthpiece & A Throw Down
By "Bret "The
Threat" Newton - Pound4Pound.com
Tony Grano may be praised for being the first to put a loss on
prospect Travis Kauffman's record, however as it often happens
in the sport of boxing, with the win came controversy.
For the first three rounds, the two exchanged in some exciting
action in the middle of the ring. Both seemed to suit one
another with their styles, but Kauffman appeared to have the
upper hand in each round. Kauffman was staggered momentarily
early in round 2, but outboxed Grano for the remainder of that
round.
In the 4th round, Kauffman had Grano in all kinds of trouble.
Grano was staggered from rope to rope and looked ready to go.
That's when the oldest trick in the book came about: A Low Blow.
Whether intentional or not, this gave Grano a chance to
recuperate from the beating he was taking as Kauffman
immediately turned his back in pain. Click Here For More

already equaled Kostya Tszyu by holding all the major body belts
of IBF/WBC/WBA. Darchinyan is managed by Elias Nasser and
promoted by Gary Shaw.
Colombian Silences
Mabuza
By David Isaacson - The Times
Local boxer goes down to late sucker punch from unbeaten Perez.
Yonnhy Perez shocked local boxing fans on Friday night when he
stopped home-town favourite Silence Mabuza in the final round of
their IBF bantamweight eliminator at the Springs Arena.
After this war had been stopped 1min 06sec into the 12th round,
Mabuza said: “It was just one punch, but I’m still here.”
Yes, it was a single left hand that landed flush on Mabuza’s
chin, sending him reeling across the ring and onto the canvas.

"Dawson Vacates
Title"
By Dan Rafael - ESPN.com
Chad Dawson has been down this road before: Should he fight a
mandatory bout with little commercial value against a relatively
unknown opponent? Or go for the money in a fight against a top
opponent that fans and media are pushing for?
Just like he did last summer, Dawson went for choice No. 2.
Rather than be forced to fight obscure mandatory challenger
Tavoris Cloud this fall in a bout that HBO, which has Dawson
under contract, had no interest in televising, Dawson vacated
his IBF light heavyweight belt on Wednesday.Click Here

"Look for Alfredo
Angulo to Steal the Show . . . Again"
By Jake Donovan - BoxingScene.com
You don’t always need to headline the show to be the one that
everyone is talking about at the end of the night.
Just ask Alfredo Angulo, who’s rapidly becoming an expert on the
subject. The 2004 Mexican Olympian is barely four years into his
professional career, is often found in the co-feature or
supporting slot of a given telecast and has yet to truly
establish his own fan base.
Yet come Saturday night, he once again threatens to be the one
everyone is buzzing about as they make their way to the exits.
It would be quite a statement considering the headlining act he
precedes this Saturday. Click Here

Can Angulo Pick Up
the Mexican Mantle?
By Steve Kim -
MaxBoxing.com
As of
now, there is no big Mexican star. Yeah, sure, there are a
plethora of standout boxers from that country, but there is
nobody who can be described as a fighter who the people identify
with and rally behind as one. There will never, ever be another
Julio Cesar Chavez (the Babe Ruth of Mexico) but clearly there
is a void. And when this exists, the business of boxing suffers.
Let's face it, with the changing demographics of this country
and the Latin fanbase being so dominant in the boxing
marketplace, boxing needs a standout or two from south of the
border.Click Here

Rafael's remark: After three consecutive epic junior
featherweight championship fights with fellow Mexican Israel
Vazquez between March 2007 and March 2008, both fighters needed
long rests. While Vazquez remains out of action while eye
injuries heal, Marquez, 34, finally returned to the ring looking
to shake off losses in the second and third fights, the 2007 and
2008 fights of the year. The former two-division champ made it a
successful comeback, notching his first win since the first
Vazquez fight more than two years ago. Marquez's timing was a
little off, and his jab looked a little slow. He also ate a
couple of right hands from Colombia's Mendoza, 37, but he seemed
to take it well. In the third round, Marquez suddenly landed a
flush overhand right hand on Mendoza's chin and dropped him to
his backside. Mendoza struggled to his feet, and there was a bit
of confusion because referee Carlos Garcia did a poor job. He
made no indication of what was going on. Ultimately, though, the
fight had been called off because Garcia was walking a dazed
Mendoza back to his corner. It's nice to see Marquez, the
younger brother of lightweight champ Juan Manuel Marquez, back
in action. When Vazquez is ready to go, there's a good chance we
may see a fourth installment of their rivalry in the fall.

Prepares For Life After Israel Vazquez
Jake Donovan -
BoxingScene.com
Rafael Marquez. Israel Vazquez.
The good and bad thing about unforgettable multiple fight series
is that no matter what you’ve accomplished prior to and what you
go on to achieve afterward, your name remains forever linked to
the fighter who repeatedly joined you in a journey to hell and
back.
Twice Marquez and Vazquez hooked up to provide the best fight of
the year. Their August 2007 rematch won top honors for that
year, while the dynamic duo were unanimously recognized for
their rubber match providing not just the best fight of 2008 but
one of the greatest fights in recent memory. Click Here

By Michael Swann Three years ago promoter Gary Shaw had Jeff Lacy, Winky
Wright, and the late Diego Corrales as champions and was
considered by many as the Promoter of the Year. This year he has
Chad Dawson, Vic Darchinyan, and Timothy Bradley as belt holders
and you could make a solid argument that this is a superior
trio. In addition, as always he has a solid group of young
contenders in his stable awaiting their turn to make their mark.
