Antonio DeMarco Ready For
Edwin Valero, And Anyone Else

By Jake Donovan - boxingscene.com
There’s something to be said about a fighter who wasn’t always destined for greatness yet still remain at a pace similar to those who were groomed for success from the moment they turned pro.

Antonio DeMarco wasn’t born with a silver spoon in his mouth, nor did he enjoy the benefit of a sugar daddy paying for his fights and cherry picking his opposition on the way to the top.

Instead, he went about his business the old-fashioned way – he earned it.  C

Timothy Bradley’s Promoter: “Amir Khan is a Fraud!”

By Rick Reeno - boxingscene.com
Earlier today, BoxingScene.com was contacted by promoter Gary Shaw, who had a lot to say after reading our story on the “Twitter” battle between junior welterweights Amir Khan and Paulie Malignaggi .

Khan is claiming that Malignaggi is avoiding a potential fight between the two of them, and Malignaggi is making the same claims about Khan. Shaw weighed in with a few comments of his own. He says Malignaggi is telling the truth, not Khan.

A few weeks ago, Shaw was negotiating with Khan’s former promoter Frank Warren to match the British champion against unbeaten WBO title holder Timothy Bradley. The two promoters were close to a deal, but it quickly went down the toilet when Khan signed a contract with Golden Boy Promotions. Shaw was turned down when he reached out to Golden Boy to make a Khan-Bradley fight. Click Here For More

Antonio DeMarco, the Tijuana Tough Guy

By Steve Kim - maxboxing.com
When it comes to Antonio DeMarco, who challenges for the WBC lightweight title this Saturday night in Monterrey, Mexico (Showtime 9 PM, ET/PT), looks can be deceiving. His rather frail body looks as though a stiff breeze could knock him over. He’s got the arms the size of Olive Oyl, yet he packs a pretty stiff punch. DeMarco’s also a nice guy. And you know where Leo Durocher thought those guys ended up.

But you shouldn’t judge this book by its cover.

"He’s a very, very calm individual with a lot of self-confidence," says his promoter Gary Shaw, "and I guess, when you look at Tony DeMarco and his physique and everything else, you worry about him. You want to go run and get him a meal ticket. So he’s got a real deceiving personality for a fighter and, physically, he’s very deceiving for a fighter."

DeMarco speaks
"Valero knows I respect him"

Despite being in the middle of his intense preparation for his next bout against current WBC lightweight champion Edwin Valero (26-0, 26 KOs), interim WBC lightweight champion Antonio DeMarco (23-1-1, 17 KOs) is well aware of the comments that have been attributed to him that have caught the attention of the undefeated Venezuelan champion.

“I don’t like to be the type of fighter that talks bad about my opponents. I don’t trash talk and I don’t give bad opinions. That is why in interviews I try to give good answers and I concentrate on what I say,” DeMarco calmly stated. “Edwin Valero knows that I respect him as a boxer and as a person and I have always said that he is a great champion and for me it is an honor and a privilege to challenge him for his world title. He should know from other interviews of mine that I am not that kind of person.”

Is Tim Bradley Among Boxing's Most Feared Fighters?

By Lem Satterfield - boxing.fanhouse.com
Tim Bradley's career-best performance appears to have scared away potential opponents.

The WBO light welterweight (140 pounds) king is coming off of last month's lop-sided, 12-round unanimous decision over 25-year-old Lamont Peterson, who probably lost every round and was floored for the first time in his career despite entering with a record of 27-0, with 13 knockouts.

Nicknamed "The Desert Storm," Bradley's effort earned him honors as FanHouse's Most Dominant Performance Of The Year for 2009. Click Here For More

Antonio DeMarco: "I Dare To Say My

"It is very important, the sparring partners help me with my work and they are willing to do anything. SecondsOut Worst Decision of the Year:
Ali Funeka D12 Joan Guzman

By Andrew Wake - secondsout.com
With dubious scoring rearing its ugly head in championship fights on what seemed like a monthly basis, 2009 was not a good year for boxing’s decision makers.

A shortlist of the most questionable verdicts from this year naturally included Sergio Martinez only earning a draw with Kermit Cintron despite outlanding the Puerto Rican throughout and flooring him for more than 10 seconds in the seventh, Juan Diaz’s questionable unanimous decision over Paulie Malignaggi in August and Carl Froch’s narrowly retaining his WBC super-middleweight title against Andre Dirrell in October’s first stage of the Super Six series.

Bradley is Desert Stormin'
the Jr. Welterweight Division

By Steve Kim - maxboxing.com
As noted trainer Freddie Roach looks ahead to Manny Pacquiao’s March 13th showdown versus Floyd Mayweather, he has already made it clear who he’d like to utilize as sparring partners for this upcoming training camp. One is Amir Khan, who has already accepted the assignment. Which is not much of a surprise given that Khan is part of Roach’s stable at the Wild Card Boxing Club and has sparred with ’the Pac Man’ in the past. The other is reigning WBO jr. welterweight king, Tim Bradley.

This here will be a much harder sell. ’the Desert Storm’ like Khan, is a fighter who makes lucrative paydays and has a major championship on his resume. But unlike the WBA jr. welterweight title holder, he has no ties to Roach or his gym.

Bradley Is Poetry In Motion

Report & Photos By Roy & Marlene Marquez - Pound4Pound.com
Timothy Bradley stuck and moved his way past Lamont Peterson to retain the WBO 140 lb. championship at a sold out Agua Caliente Casino, Resort & Spa in Rancho Mirage, CA. Non-stop movement was not Bradley’s original game plan, but became plan B at the insistence of his corner. “The game plan was to take it to him, but he decided to take it to me”, explained Bradley of the change in tactics midway through the contest.

Bradley, of nearby Palm Springs, CA, found a home for his right hand early in the second. Bradley (25-0) landed the punch repeatedly in a round he won decisively. An overhand right dropped Peterson early in the third, setting the stage for a tremendous round of boxing. “I planned to win the first four rounds big”, said Peterson. “But when I went down in the third it was time to fight.” For the remainder of the round the combatants fought toe-to-toe exchanging vicious body blows. Peterson (27-1) continued the body assault in the fourth to win the round. “He made me fight”, said Bradley. “He made me do things in there I normally don’t do.”

Bradley Retains Title With Unanimous Decision
Over Previously Undefeated Peterson

Photo: Marlene Marquez - Pound4Pound.com
Timothy Bradley (now 25-0-0-1, 11 KO's) retained the WBO Jr. Welterweight Title with a unanimous decision over Lamont Peterson. The fight started quick as the two men were locked on the inside exchanging heavy body punches. A huge right at the end of the round staggered Peterson. In round 3, another right on the side of the head sent Peterson down for the first time in the fight. Peterson got up and dug deep, fighting hard, winning the rest of the round, including coming back to take the next round. However that would be the best Peterson had to offer as Bradley took control of the remainder of the fight, slipping that majority of Peterson's punches and landing good combinations. Final scores were 118-110, 119-108 and 120-107. Peterson falls to 27-1, 13 KO's.

The fight started off well for Rojas who was able to use his reach advantage, landing a few big right hands on the open Darchinyan. However, Darchinyan was hunting for a knockout and it quickly came as Rojas, who had his back against the ropes, decided to trade. Darchinyan jumped in with some big punches as the left hand caught Rojas flush on the chin. Rojas went straight down on his back and the fight was stopped at 2:54 of the 2nd round. Rojas falls to 32-11, 22 KO's.

Boxing's momentum stung by wave of suspect scoring

NEW YORK — Paul Malignaggi said all along that he'd never beat Juan Diaz in Texas if the fight went to the scorecards. It did, and he was right.

The Brooklyn-based light welterweight lost that bout in August, a back-and-forth brawl that left a huge crowd in Houston on its feet. But few believe it was as lopsided as the 118-110 scorecard turned in by Gale Van Hoy, with some accusing the judge of blatantly favoring the hometown fighter.

"Some people thought there was maybe more to it than just a bad decision. Only Gale Van Hoy will ever know that," said Malignaggi, who landed a rematch against Diaz this Saturday in Chicago.. Click Here For More

Andre Dirrell (18-1, 13 KOs), who is promoted by Shaw, will face tournament leader Arthur Abraham (31-0, 25 KOs) of Germany in the pre-determined opener of Group Stage 2 on March 6 at the Agua Caliente Casino Resort Spa in Rancho Mirage, Calif. Click Here For More

Showtime to show Vazquez-Marquez IV

By Dan Rafael - espn.com
Israel Vazquez and Rafael Marquez have already waged an epic trilogy consisting of 25 rounds of furious, non-stop action. Now, the Mexican warriors will clash for the fourth -- and final -- time, the promoters for both fighters told ESPN.com on Friday.

The deal for the much-discussed fight was completed following a final conference call between Marquez promoter Gary Shaw, Golden Boy's Richard Schaefer, who promotes Vazquez, and Showtime executive Ken Hershman, Shaw said.

The scheduled 12-round featherweight fight will take place May 22 on Showtime from the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Click Here For More

Timothy Bradley vs. Lamont Peterson
Teleconference Highlights

TIMOTHY BRADLEY: “Lamont Peterson is a great fighter; I grew up with him in the amateurs. I know him very well and he knows me very well. I’m just looking forward to the fight. I’m hungry and I’m willing to show the world what I have. We’re both undefeated, which makes for a great fight. We both have speed and power, and we both have boxing ability, so it’s going to be a great fight. But, at the end of the day, it’s my job to teach Lamont Peterson how to lose, and that’s what I’m going to do on Dec. 12.”

LAMONT PETERSON:
“I’ve been training ever since I went out to California to see Timothy and Nate fight. We pretty much knew this was going to be my next fight, we just didn’t know when at the time. Right now, I’ve been in great shape for two or three months. We’re just trying to level everything out and doing what we need to do to give us a chance to win. We feel really good right now, and we’re looking to go ahead and win the title on Dec. 12." Click Here For More

The Shaw-riff Seeks Justice for Funeka

By Steve Kim - maxboxing.com
It’s not clear who had a worse Thanksgiving weekend, Ali Funeka, who got the shaft from the judges in his fight for the vacant IBF lightweight title against Joan Guzman, or Tiger Woods who might have gotten the shaft of a sand wedge from his irate wife.

"Well, I would say Tiger because Ali didn’t get hit with anything," said Gary Shaw, who promotes the lanky South African. And he has a point, hey, it’s not like Funeka was ever laid out, needing medical attention.

But on a serious note, the scorecards rendered by judges Alan Davis and Benoit Russell, who both had the fight a dead even draw at 114-114( while Joseph Pasquale had Funeka winning big at 116-112) is the runaway choice as the worst decision of 2009. There is nary a soul who believes that Funeka did not win this fight handily. Click Here For More

What now for Hopkins? Maybe Dawson

By Dan Rafael - espn.com
Chad Dawson, the young light heavyweight star, has been calling out Bernard Hopkins for ages, but Hopkins didn't have a lot of interest in fighting him. And who could blame Hopkins, with a potential big-money rematch against Roy Jones Jr. on the table for early 2010?

However, that was until Jones got knocked out by Danny Green in the first round Wednesday in Australia, hopefully bringing Jones' great career to a close once and for all.

Hopkins will attend to his business Wednesday night against Enrique Ornelas, but there won't be a fight with Jones now. Click Here For More

Chad Dawson Calls Out Bernard Hopkins

By Lem Satterfield
Outside of the ropes, it takes a lot to get Chad Dawson riled up.

"Chad Dawson is one of the best fighters in the world, and he shows it every time that he goes into the ring," said Dawson's promoter, Gary Shaw. "It's just not Chad's style to talk smack or to call people out."

But that changed on Wednesday morning, after Dawson discovered that Roy Jones was stopped in the first round, likely scuttling a proposed, megabout with Bernard Hopkins -- a man Dawson has long targeted as an opponent. Click Here For More

Funeka robbery can't be swept under the rug

By Dan Rafael - espn.com
Bad decisions don't happen just in the United States and Germany. You can add Canada to the list.

Lightweight Ali Funeka dominated Joan Guzman so severely that the reading of the scorecards at the end of 12 mostly one-sided rounds appeared to be a mere formality on Saturday night at Colisée Pepsi in Quebec City.

Gary Shaw, who co-promotes Funeka with Cedric Kushner, was inside the ring after the final bell with a huge smile on his face, congratulating his man on what appeared clear as day -- that Funeka would win a unanimous decision and a vacant lightweight belt in his second shot at a 135-pound title. Gary Shaw speaks about the controversial
Funeka-Guzman decision

By Geoffrey Ciani - eastsideboxing.com
At the conclusion of Saturday night’s fight between Ali Funeka and Joan Guzman, the verdict seemed pretty clear—Ali Funeka won the fight. This was not an especially difficult fight to score. Funeka won, and he should have been awarded the vacant IBF lightweight title. To the astonishment of those in attendance and those watching around the world, the fight was inexplicably ruled a draw. I had a chance to speak with promoter Gary Shaw after the fight, and here is what he had to say:

Funeka beats up Guzman....but only gets a draw

El Paso Times
In the wake of Manny Pacquiao's demolition of Miguel Cotto - and some very real signs that boxing is emerging from a decades-long stupor - things have been looking pretty positive for the sweet science lately.

Leave it to a bad decision to remind us how boxing sank so low in the first place.

Despite outpunching and outslugging Joan Guzman in a battle for the vacant IBF lightweight title, Ali Funeka came away with only a draw to show for it Saturday in Quebec City, Canada. It was easily the most impressive performance of Funeka's career, as the South African put a hurtin' on the smaller Guzman early, ripping the native Dominican with every punch in the manual: jabs, right hands, left hooks and uppercuts.

Gary Shaw and The Canadian Heist

Jerry Glick - secondsout.com
HBO had a great show on Saturday night that was marred by yet another bad decision. This time it was a draw between unbeaten former two division champion Joan Guzman and Ali Funeka at the Pepsi Coliseum in Québec City, Québec, Canada. While a draw may sound fair enough it clearly was not as Funeka, looking like a cross between Tommy Hearns and Paul Williams appeared to control the ring almost completely after the first two or three rounds.

After a few rounds Guzman’s face was a mask of blood that came from his nose and a cut. Once the long and lean Funeka got untracked it was almost all his fight to dominate.

I spoke to Funeka’s promoter Gary Shaw the next day and he was ready to fight everyone in sight who he believed screwed his charge.

Funeka Gets Robbed Of Biggest Win Of His Career
After Putting On One Sided Performance Over Guzman Fight Declared A Draw After Funeka Wins 10 Round To 2

Pound4Pound.com
The biggest robbery of the year just took place in Quebec, Canada as Ali Funeka put on a boxing showcase and appeared to win TEN of the 12 championship rounds against undefeated Joan Guzman, only to walk away with a draw. Guzman came out string and appeared to win the first two rounds, but that was it. Funeka took complete control over the remaining ten rounds and took Guzman to school, bloodying his face to a pulp and nearly stopping him in each of the final 5 rounds. The referee could very well have stepped in during any of those rounds and stopped the fight as Guzman was just taking a beating against the ropes.

Final scores were 116-112, 114-114, 114-114.

Stevie Wonder could have seen Funeka won this fight hands down.

Rafael Marquez Responds To Espinoza, Vazquez Bout

When will Israel Vazquez-Rafael Marquez IV take place?

“I’m a fighter, not a negotiator,” says two-time world champion Rafael Marquez, “I read all this talk about money and promoters and networks, but none of that concerns me. I am ready to fight, and my promoter Gary Shaw is ready to begin negotiations with Israel’s people.”

“Gary has been my promoter for a long time, and he has full authority from me to make an offer to the Vazquez people,” says Marquez, whose brother Juan Manuel recently fought Floyd Mayweather in a blockbuster attraction.

Dawson wins but fails to entertain

By Dan Rafael - ESPN.com
HARTFORD, Conn. -- Whatever lingering questions anyone had about the veracity of light heavyweight Chad Dawson's decision win against Glen Johnson after their rousing slugfest in April 2008, they've been answered.

Dawson had won their initial meeting via unanimous decision, 116-112 on each of the three judges' scorecards to retain a light heavyweight world title. But Dawson faded late and there were questions left behind, especially from the Johnson camp, which claimed it was a robbery.

Angulo mauls Yorgey in one-sided affair

Dawson Makes Johnson Look His Age
With Near Shutout Unanimous Decision

Pound4Pound.com
Chad Dawson (now 29-0-0-1, 17 KO's) won a much easier fight with Glen Johnson than their first encounter, with a unanimous decision. Although two judges had it much too close (one round from being a draw), the reality was Johnson won about 2 rounds at most.

From the opening round, Dawson used his height, reach, and movement to land and move. That's how the majority of the fight went. Johnson's pressure wasn't the same as any of his previous fights, but one is to question whether his age has finally caught up with him, or was it Dawson's technique that caused the confusion.

Angulo Obliterates Yorgey In 3,
Candidate For KO Of The Year

Pound4Pound.com
Alfredo Angulo (now 17-1, 14 KO's) scored a more than impressive knockout over the previously undefeated, but untested, Harry Joe Yorgey in just 3 rounds. Angulo came out strong once the bell rang as Yorgey's plan was to move and box. Angulo pressured Yorgey to fight off the ropes, but Yorgey seemed to back himself there and into the corner often.

In round 2, a huge right hand stopped Yorgey in his tracks and momentarily knocked him unconscious while standing. Yorgey regained his senses before falling to the canvas, but was finally dropped moments later with another big right hand. Up on shaky legs, Yorgey was staggered around the ring as Angulo began beating him to a pulp. Yorgey miraculously made it out of the round, staggering to his corner.

CHAD DAWSON: “I’m feeling some buzz around the city about the fight. I’ve really just been sitting in my hotel room and spending time with my kids. I’m sure come Saturday night there will be a lot of buzz.

“I can’t wait to get in the ring and shut him up. It’s been almost two years now. After I’m done with him he won’t be able to say nothing except I lost to Chad Dawson twice."

GLEN JOHNSON:
“Chad is going to have his fans there and he should. It’s his hometown. I feed off the crowd either way. If it’s for me I feed off of it. If it’s against me I feed off of it. So it really doesn’t matter where we fight.

“I have done all the work. Now, it’s just about talking to the press and watching some tape. I believe I have what it takes to win this fight. It’s just about maintaining and getting a lot of rest. At my age (40), I have to be careful and smart with what I do." Click Here For More

With few appealing fights left,
Dawson must prove his worth

Chad Dawson has a problem. A 175-pound problem, to be exact.

At 28-0, Dawson is arguably the most dominant force in the light heavyweight division. He holds a lopsided win over Tomasz Adamek, the current cruiserweight champion who recently demolished heavyweight Andrew Golota. He owns a win over Glen Johnson and two pulverizing victories over Antonio Tarver, the last of which ended Tarver's career. He has power (17 knockouts) and he has skill. Perez dethrones Agbeko in scorcher

By Dan Rafael - espn.com
Have you caught your breath yet from watching this all-out slugfest? Perez and Agbeko aren't the most well-known fighters around, but they're really good and exceptionally entertaining, something Showtime is aware of since it was featuring Agbeko for the third time in his past four bouts. This was a terrific action fight from start to finish and should be among the honorable mentions when it comes time to assess the best fights of the year. It sure was a sensational way for casino magnate Phil Ruffin to introduce boxing at the Treasure Island Hotel & Casino after making a deal with promoter Don King to host the show. Yonnhy Perez:

One of the great things about boxing is that you never know from where the next great fighter will emerge. In many of today’s mainstream sports, “the next big thing” has been hyped since they laced up their cleats or athletic shoes for their high school. In boxing, a poor kid that barely owned a pair of shoes as a fifteen-year-old can become star with a ton of hard work and a few breaks. Demarco will fight for the WBC interim world title on that same night against Alfaro and I believe so much in Antonio Demarco...I think Chad is going to light it up in front of his hometown fans. I believe he beat Glen Johnson in Florida in front of his hometown crowd. I believe he will do it more convincingly this time, so I'm really looking forward to it. I also have Ali Funeka in November fighting against Juan Guzman in Canada for the IBF title and I''m excited about that. Then we come back and we've got Ola Afolabi fighting in Germany against Marco Huck and I believe Ola Afolabi will knock him out and that will be another great victory for the WBO title. Perez Tries to Slay 'King Kong'

Adding some spice to the proceedings is that Agbeko has predicted a stoppage of Perez and he crashed his media day in Santa Fe Springs, where the two engaged in some good ol’ fashioned jawing.( Hey, when you’re two relatively unknown bantamweights, you gotta do something to drum up interest.) Gary Shaw: Abraham-Dirrell Staying In The USA

GL: Obviously, things didn't go the way you were expecting in Andre Dirrell's WBC super middleweight title challenge against Carl Froch. He showed he could fight 12 rounds, and he showed he could really fight during the championship rounds. I felt we won the fight by a round. I don't think the point deduction was warranted, but it was a dirty fight on Froch's part, with a lot of hitting behind the head, continuously, even throwing him down in the 5th round. Judges need to score, in my book, not on style, but on effective blows. If you watch the fight, Dirrell landed more blows than Froch did."  Click Here For More

Dirrell Gets Robbed In England

Carl Froch (now 26-0, 20 KO's) retained the WBC Super Middleweight title controversially against Andre Dirrell in a fight that had more illegal tactics than actual boxing. Hitting behind the head, holding, falling to the canvas, take downs, pushing, headlocks, the works, this fight was ugly from beginning to end.

However, it was Dirrell who looked to have clearly secured victory. Although his style was not pleasing to the fans, often holding and running away even smothering himself to avoid getting hit, it was just that: HE WASN'T GETTING HIT. All while Froch was waiting and waiting, throwing slow and missing often, getting countered in every round, even getting staggered and nearly out on his feet at the end of the 10th. Earlier in the same round, a point deduction from Dirrell for holding was issued. Mind you Froch was landing, but not enough to win more than 3 rounds. Even with the point deduction, Dirrell appeared to have taken the title.

Dirrell falls to 18-1 with 13 KO's and will be taking on Arthur Abraham next in the tournament.

Froch & Dirrell Weigh-In

There was high drama at the historic Old Market Square in Nottingham today when Andre “The Matrix” Dirrell failed to make the weight at the first time of asking ahead of his Super Six World Boxing Classic showdown with Carl “The Cobra” Froch at the Trent FM Arena tomorrow night.

Earlier in the week WBC World Champion Froch intimated that his undefeated American challenger may be struggling to make the 168 pound Super Middleweight limit and he turned out to be correct as Dirrell’s first attempt at making the weight saw him tip the scales at 168.4 pounds. Andre Dirrell aims to be Gary Shaw’s next big thing

By Ron Lewis - timesonline.co.uk
Gary Shaw has been around enough champions to know that it does not do your credibility much good to make outlandish predictions.

In 2005, the American promoter arrived in Britain accompanying Jeff Lacy, the unbeaten IBF super-middleweight champion and a man being touted as the new Mike Tyson. So confident was Shaw of victory for his man that he said he would bet his house on it. But the man in the other corner was Joe Calzaghe.

Q & A with Alfredo Angulo

By Anson Wainwright - 15rounds.com
One of the most exciting fighters in the world at the moment is all action Mexican Light Middleweight Alfredo “Perro” Angulo 16-1(13) who next gets back in action on 7 November. Angulo was born in Mexicali, Mexico and was one of six children .At 17 he first got in Boxing after watching the second Oscar De La Hoya-Julio Cesar Chavez Snr fight. He enjoyed a successful amateur career that took him to the 2004 Olympics. Having finished his amateur days with an impressive 80-15 he decided to turn pro under the astute guidance of Mike Criscio who also manages Light Heavyweight champion Chad Dawson. Angulo is trained by Clemente Medina at The Maywood Boxing Club & promoted by Gary Shaw. After a slow start Angulo stepped up and became a player in the talent rich Light Middleweight division. Since then he’s kept his foot on the gas with the only setback a decision loss to the vastly more experience former world champion Kermit Cintron. Since that loss in which Angulo was fighting days after being bed ridden with Flu, he has got back into action with a thumping second round KO over Gabriel Rosado. Now it’s time to do it in front of a bigger audience on HBO against unbeaten hardnosed Harry Joe Yorgey. Angulo is currently ranked 5 by the WBC, 6 WBA, 8 WBO & 9 IBF.

Roadblocks don’t deter Dirrell’s dreams

Anthony and Andre Dirrell grew up dreaming of wearing world championship belts around their waists.

Just like many kids would dream of being the hero of the Super Bowl or hitting the home run to win the World Series, the Dirrell brothers would go to sleep at night with visions of boxing greatness.

Andre Dirrell's fighting family
will drive him on against Carl Froch

By Kevin Mitchell - guardian.co.uk
Leon "Bumper" Lawson could have been a contender. Instead, he sparred with Muhammad Ali as a teenage amateur back in Louisville, gave up boxing when he came out of the armed forces and joined the bedazzled throng of the great man's lifelong admirers.

Leon never did make it as a fighter. But he knows a grandson who might. As he puts away the faded photos of himself, family and Ali, which he carries like priceless heirlooms in his wallet, Lawson nods across the ring in a Nottingham hotel towards Andre Dirrell, a slim, handsome young man of deceptive menace.

Classic chance for Dirrell to make impact

ANDRE Dirrell might not be as decorated as some of the other boxers in the six-man super middleweight tournament that has been dubbed the World Boxing Classic. Other fighters either own world championships or are ex-champions, while another is an Olympic gold medalist.

But Dirrell (18-0, 13 KOs) figures this is his opportunity to not just make a name for himself, but prove he’s the best 168-pounder in boxing.

“My main goal is to become a superstar in the super middleweight division,” Dirrell said this week. “This is what I’ve been waiting for my whole life. Now is my time and I’m going to show my true talents. The world is going to know Andre Dirrell at the end of this tournament.”

Cancer Battle Bolsters Bond Between Brothers,

Like many siblings, the bond between the fighting Dirrell brothers, Andre and Anthony, seems unshakable.

Whether theirs is a fistic synergy, or a sibling symbiosis, their abilities to thrive off of one another is undeniable in the ring, where they boast identical 18-0 records as super middleweights (168 pounds).

Anthony Dirrell, a right-hander who turns 25 on Oct. 14, has 15 knockouts, the last being in the seventh round over Alfredo Contreras in August. Andre Dirrell (pictured right), a left-hander who turned 27 on Sept. 7, has 13 knockouts, the last being a sixth-round KO of Indiana's Derrick Findley in March.

New School Pick of the Week: Tyrone Brunson

By Jake Donovan - boxingscene
Crawl, walk, then run.

It’s a literal progression of life when you’re born into this world, while serving as a metaphor for all other aspects of life. The developmental stage of a boxer’s career is supposed to be spent “crawling, then walking” through a steady stream of progressive competition.

Somewhere along the way, those who guided the career of Tyrone Brunson decided it was wiser to hit the ground running.

Sort of.

Angulo-Yorgey Broken Down By Loew

By Ryan Burton
BoxingScene.com spoke to trainer Jack Loew about Harry Joe Yorgey's upcoming bout against Alfredo Angulo. He also says Kelly Pavlik is set to resume training full speed on Wednesday for his December 5 title defense against Paul Williams. See what else this trainer from Youngstown has to say in this BoxingScene exclusive interview.

BoxingScene: How is Yorgey's training camp going so far?

Jack Loew: You know I didn't really no much about Harry until I started working with him. I saw him fight against Ronald Hearns and then he and my son became friends and I heard he was looking to make a move so we got ahold of him. The kid works his ass off in the gym. That is what I like the most about him. He has a very tough fight in front of him. Angulo stands right in front of you. He is not a hard guy to figure out. You just got to be able to be in greater shape than him and be able to throw more punches and get him with angles just like Kermit Cintron did. He fought a great fight against him. Grano Win Over Kauffman Due To Low Blow,
Loss Of Mouthpiece & A Throw Down

By "Bret "The Threat" Newton - Pound4Pound.com
Tony Grano may be praised for being the first to put a loss on prospect Travis Kauffman's record, however as it often happens in the sport of boxing, with the win came controversy.

For the first three rounds, the two exchanged in some exciting action in the middle of the ring. Both seemed to suit one another with their styles, but Kauffman appeared to have the upper hand in each round. Kauffman was staggered momentarily early in round 2, but outboxed Grano for the remainder of that round.

In the 4th round, Kauffman had Grano in all kinds of trouble. Grano was staggered from rope to rope and looked ready to go. That's when the oldest trick in the book came about: A Low Blow. Whether intentional or not, this gave Grano a chance to recuperate from the beating he was taking as Kauffman immediately turned his back in pain. Click Here For More

Lions & Pit Bulls & Pugs...Oh My!
Angulo & Dirrell Victorious

By William Trillo - Pound4Pound.com
Like a journey to The Land of Oz, ESPN's Friday night show was filled with an assortment of wild beasts, both 4 legged and two legged. It was a near carnival atmosphere but the crowd at Buffalo Bill's in Nevada did not complain, in fact they enjoyed all the festivities, and rightly so, the night was full of thrills and spills thanks to the Main Events that featured a couple of Gary Shaw promoted stars.

The main event saw Jr. Middleweight Alfredo "Perro" Angulo (16-1,13 KO's), in his first fight since his first pro loss. Angulo wasted no time jumping on his foe Gabriel Rosado (12-4 7 KO's), as he dumped him on the seat of his pants with a nice right hand early.

Alfredo Angulo bounced back from his first loss to stop Gabriel Rosado in just two rounds. A short right on the side of the head sent Rosado down for the first time in the fight during round 2. Rosado complained that it was a hit on the break when the referee told the fighters to stop holding, however Rosado was not protecting himself as the rules were clearly stated to him. Up on uneasy legs, Angulo went in for the kill, dropping a staggering Rosado two more times before the referee had no choice but to waive it off.

Referee David Mendoza ruled that a Bradley punch, not an accidental head butt, in the third round caused a cut and damage to Campbell’s vision that forced the ringside physician to halt the contest on the advice of Campbell’s corner before the start of round four.

Former two-division world champion Vernon Forrest was shot and killed Saturday night during an attempted carjacking, promoter Gary Shaw said.

His work with kids, I think people knew how much he cared for kids, underprivileged and mentally challenged people. He was a real decent human being outside the ropes."

WSB Radio in Atlanta first reported the shooting, citing a police spokesman. Forrest, who was 38, was an Atlanta native. He was shot seven or eight times as he chased at least two men who had tried to steal his Jaguar as he put air in his tires at an Atlanta gas station, Lt. Keith Meadows said, according to the radio station.

Bradley knows what he's

By Robert Morales, Press-Telegram
Timothy Bradley was sitting ringside in Mexico in March 2008 when Nate Campbell stunned the boxing world by winning a split decision over Juan Diaz and taking his three lightweight world title belts.

It was astonishing because Campbell had turned 36 the day before.

That's somewhat old for a fighter in lighter weights. Making what Campbell did even more surprising was Diaz was just 24, had an 8-0 record in championship fights and was a consensus top 10 pound-for-pound boxer.

"When I was sitting there in Cancun, I could not believe it," Bradley said.

Darchinyan: I want more titles!

IBF/WBA/WBC super flyweight champion Vic Darchinyan (32-1-1, 26 KOs) is looking forward to winning the IBF bantamweight title from Joseph Agbeko (26-1, 22 KOs) when they clash on July 11 at the Bank Atlantic Center in Sunrise, Florida.

Darchinyan said. ”Maybe I stay for a year at bantamweight and unify the titles then move up a division - I want to win more world titles. People are talking because I am moving up to bantamweight that my power isn’t going to be enough but that is why I want to go to America and be more focused on my training and show the world my power is more than enough at bantamweight. Everyone knows I have a lot of power in my left. Now with all my sparring - I am more focused on my right and I can feel my right hand is very powerful now, too, and my sparring partners have told me this. My preparation has been very good and there is five and half weeks to go.”

Darchinyan will be sparring with WBA featherweight champion Chris John while he is in the USA. If Darchinyan is successful in winning the bantamweight championship he will equal Jeff Fenech as Australia’s three divisional world champion. He has already equaled Kostya Tszyu by holding all the major body belts of IBF/WBC/WBA. Darchinyan is managed by Elias Nasser and promoted by Gary Shaw.

"Look for Alfredo Angulo to Steal the Show . . . Again"

You don’t always need to headline the show to be the one that everyone is talking about at the end of the night.

Just ask Alfredo Angulo, who’s rapidly becoming an expert on the subject. The 2004 Mexican Olympian is barely four years into his professional career, is often found in the co-feature or supporting slot of a given telecast and has yet to truly establish his own fan base.

Yet come Saturday night, he once again threatens to be the one everyone is buzzing about as they make their way to the exits.

It would be quite a statement considering the headlining act he precedes this Saturday.

As of now, there is no big Mexican star. Yeah, sure, there are a plethora of standout boxers from that country, but there is nobody who can be described as a fighter who the people identify with and rally behind as one. There will never, ever be another Julio Cesar Chavez (the Babe Ruth of Mexico) but clearly there is a void. And when this exists, the business of boxing suffers. Let's face it, with the changing demographics of this country and the Latin fanbase being so dominant in the boxing marketplace, boxing needs a standout or two from south of the border. Rafael's remark: After three consecutive epic junior featherweight championship fights with fellow Mexican Israel Vazquez between March 2007 and March 2008, both fighters needed long rests. While Vazquez remains out of action while eye injuries heal, Marquez, 34, finally returned to the ring looking to shake off losses in the second and third fights, the 2007 and 2008 fights of the year. The former two-division champ made it a successful comeback, notching his first win since the first Vazquez fight more than two years ago. Marquez's timing was a little off, and his jab looked a little slow. He also ate a couple of right hands from Colombia's Mendoza, 37, but he seemed to take it well. In the third round, Marquez suddenly landed a flush overhand right hand on Mendoza's chin and dropped him to his backside. Mendoza struggled to his feet, and there was a bit of confusion because referee Carlos Garcia did a poor job. He made no indication of what was going on. Ultimately, though, the fight had been called off because Garcia was walking a dazed Mendoza back to his corner. It's nice to see Marquez, the younger brother of lightweight champ Juan Manuel Marquez, back in action. When Vazquez is ready to go, there's a good chance we may see a fourth installment of their rivalry in the fall.
